Basements…

Basements! Those scary holes in the ground many of us are not fond of entering…

At this moment our basement floors are being dug up because eight winters with no heat caused them to heave.

Heaved floor

Under the concrete Patrick found three layers of brick… solid shiny brick. In Victorian times brick was used for the foundation of homes. Some of it was rather weak and crumbled over time, but because our home was built in 1906 the brick discovered is solid and still quite adequate. So once our new basement floor is poured, we will have the makings of a nice basement. Patrick has assured me the basement will be warm and well lit… so there will be no cold scary corners.

At the moment the basement consists of four rooms. One for cold storage, a bathroom, a utility/hobby room, and a large room we could use for our television, projector, or whatever gadget we choose to watch movies and/or shows.

Amazingly, we are finding purposes for every room, so where are we supposed to store those items we use seasonally?

All these rooms in the basement seem quite large from the sketches we have. We really don’t think we need a twelve foot by twelve foot half bath. Maybe we should adjust the size?

We have this huge house and we can’t find space for storing Christmas and other occasionally used items? That seems ludicrous!

“Patrick, HELP!”

But, this time Patrick is no help… He says the bathroom cannot be divided.

Maybe we need to consider another place for our media room. Though we can think of no better place than a place that is basically dark anyway.

Who would have guessed that a basement could present so many challenges? Back to the drawing board…
