We so love everyone’s opinion! And, please keep expressing them! You help us think, rethink, and, hopefully, in the end, make wiser choices for our new phase of life.
Since we have received more than a few comments about our choice of Tranquility Cottage as the name for our home, I thought I would address our reasoning. When we considered the name for our new home we felt we needed a name for the structure and a descriptor. And well, Tranquility is definitely our descriptor, but home sounds like an orphanage. Everyone seems fine with the “Tranquility” part. It seems to be our choice of “Cottage” that has stimulated some conversation.
So let me go through the reasoning behind our choice.
The house sitting in Gloversville is not a Log Cabin or Cape Cod.
And, though it has plenty of craftsman qualities, it most assuredly is not a craftsman style house.
Without a doubt we needed to rule out Art Deco, contemporary, modern or even mid-century modern…
Absolutely not a colonial… neither Dutch, Georgian nor Federalist.
Positively, not French Provincial, Greek Revival, Spanish, Neoclassical, Italianate or any other kind of Mediterranean stylings.
Certainly not a prairie home, farmhouse, Pueblo style, or ranch.
Finally, not a Tudor or townhouse…
Mansion or manor sounded plain ridiculous.
Those names do not represent us or our precious cottage.
Thus we are left with Victorian and cottage. We accept we are moving to a Victorian structure. We believe it qualifies to be called cottage because it is a place we have moved to relax, which a cottage is supposed to be. It meets the established house labeling guidelines.
A cottage-style house typically refers to a small home made of stone or wood siding (we have cedar shingles). It features a curved entryway, And, its front path is usually gravel or brick. We plan to put in a curved brick walkway.
It has brighter exterior colors. Our color choices are skipper blue, frost white, and garnet red. For the flowers that typically adorn the entryway creating beautiful curb appeal you need to give us a year or possibly two, but they are coming.
So given our choices and the simple way we choose to live, we feel cottage fills the bill in every area. We hope this clarifies why we chose as we did and eases each of your concerns.
