Well, we were sure about hickory for our kitchen cabinets until we stopped by the Herrl Woodcraft Showroom right here in Gloversville and saw their beautiful hickory. It was impressive, but when we saw their natural cherry cabinetry we fell in love with it… It is a naturally beautiful smooth-grained, reddish-brown hardwood that when colored in a clear finish showcases its natural characteristics. Those very characteristics that will in turn showcase the beautiful copper sink and black appliances we have already purchased for our kitchen.
Darker floors… everyone recommended darker floors… but, visually impaired lady with deep rich cabinets, black appliances and darker floors? Might be too much dark for this reasonably blind lady… As we ventured over to the Adirondack Wood Floor Co., again right here in Gloversville, we looked at the darker floors. Maybe too dark… then the less dark floors… finally settling on a beautiful natural Adirondack red oak flooring in which we plan to leave the tiny knots… Again to emphasize the red highlights of our exquisite copper sink and give the floors that whimsical cottage feel…
We are so blessed to be in such an outstanding area of the country… Local companies… local sourcing (both our cherry and red oak will be sourced locally)… and, local artisans… in abundance!
Now to our trees… our poor dying trees that have served this cottage so faithfully for so many years. Though they must be removed next week, we have already bought their replacements. But, did we buy two or three? Not quite! We bought three lovely dwarf cherry trees to fill the spaces left by the removal of the two giant trees. And, we plan to hollow out the remaining stumps and plant flowers in the hollows. Then we decided we needed a Kwanzan Flowering Cherry tree for the right middle of the front yard that can grow to its hearts content and a White Dogwood to share the space with our lovely baby magnolia on the left side of the current walkway. Then, feeling our back yard was being neglected, we found two Alberta Peach trees for that space. So though we are losing two beautiful maples, we are replacing them with two flowering trees and five fruit trees… seven wondrous trees to provide a safe haven for our lovely feathered and furry friends…
