In case you had not figured it out, we love trees… We love all kinds of trees, but especially flowering trees because they offer shelter for our feathered friends and food for our very endangered bees and butterflies.
We refuse to use pesticides, especially Roundup, as it has been proven to be harmful to our honey bees which we are losing on a daily basis. Plus, it isn’t good for humans either. I remember when DDT was the pesticide of choice until farmers realized its dangers. It took years to get it off the market in the United States and now we are fighting the same battle with Roundup! I so wish cities would elect to ban it from being used within their city limits! But, until then, at least we refuse to use it and we hope all of you do too!
But, back to our trees! You all know we will be losing two beautiful maples… age has taken their toll. But, we have already replaced them with three dwarf cherry trees, a flowering cherry tree, a dogwood, a saucer magnolia, and two Alberta peach trees. Well, Sunday we went to look for a hawthorn tree to add to our collection. We did not find a hawthorn, but we did find a plum tree. So we have added that to our fruit collection.
But, we wanted a hawthorn tree so after looking on line we found a nursery… problem was it was almost two hundred miles away. But, they had a hawthorn tree… so off we went! Road trip!
It was the first time we had headed west since arriving the beginning of April. Much of the trip we paralleled the Mohawk River. It was a beautiful drive… long, but beautiful…
When we arrived at Bristol’s Garden Center in Victor, New York we found acre after acre after acre of trees, bushes, flowers, fruits, herbs… if it grows, I am pretty sure they have it… and in abundance!
Trees were in the back… way back! Once there a lovely young man led us through row after row of trees… we kept walking back further and further through their forest of trees finally arriving at the rows of hawthorn choices. We needed a small tree so it would fit in our Baby Girl for the ride home. After searching through rows of hawthorns we found one small enough to fit into our Baby Girl.
Then, we decided while here maybe we should see if they had a wisteria tree also. So we walked more miles through trees, shrubs, bushes, and flowers until we came to the area that had a beautiful lavender-blue wisteria. We selected one… went to the cash register… then to the pick-up area for help loading the trees.
Our trees went from the dashboard to the very back of the trunk space, but they fit… filling most of my space, but we had our hawthorn and wisteria trees… or so I thought! Until Scott found a beautiful White Japanese Wisteria he thought would go well with our lovely lavender-blue wisteria. So, now we have our hawthorn and two wisteria trees… Wonder if we really have all our trees? Stay tuned…
