Road Trips Galore…

Last week we had Not ONE… Not TWO… Not THREE… but FOUR road trips. And, not a single one was an estate sale.
In our yard, by our neighbor’s fence, there is absolutely no grass and it is extremely shady. We needed plants that love shade.
Last Friday when we were on our way home from an estate sale we discovered a new plant nursery (D’Alessandro’s Nursery in Frankfort, New York). Last Saturday we returned and picked up three Blue Princess holly bushes… two female and one male. (FYI for those who don’t know, for holly bushes to make berries you need both female and male plants, though only the female plants make berries.) Tuesday we found ourselves on our way back to the nursery to pick up three more Blue Princess holly bushes… two more female Holly bushes and one more male holly bush.
By Thursday, we decided we wanted to line the whole fence with Holly bushes. Off we headed to our nursery to pick up three more females. Imagine our surprise when we arrived and found they had no more female bushes. So instead we bought two dark red ground cover plants called Coral Bells Purple Palace

and found a fountain that we really would like to put in our yard. No, we did not buy the fountain yet… Yet, being the operative word.
Ready to head home but so disappointed that we didn’t have any more Hollys.
“What if? What if, we went ahead and went to Bristol gardens. We’re almost halfway there.”
Quickly, I called Bristol Gardens to see if they had any female Holly plants.
“Oh we have lots”
So instead of turning east we headed west to Victor, New York. We forgot exactly how far it was. We had left our two babies home. They were not going to be happy with us. But we were committed.
When we arrived at the Garden Center we found our blue princess Hollys quickly. The problem with this wonderful garden is they have so many wonderful plants. We ended up picking up two Blue Rug junipers and the most darling Dwarf Hinoki Cyprus that at maturity should be about five feet by five feet.

And I forgot to tell you we had ordered a popular tulip tree and a weeping willow.
So Scott, bless his heart, spent all day Friday. Saturday we went back and picked up five more Coral Bells Purple Palace plants and Sunday he planted trees, twelve Blue Princess holly bushes, and assorted plants with a few more to go before they are all safely in the ground…
