Yard, Again…

We have so many tree adventures. As many trees, shrubs, ground cover, and hundreds of bulbs as Scott has planted, you would expect him to say, “Enough!!” But, my precious hubby, with all his muttering and grumbling, says, “I wish we could find a couple of flowering trees to add to the shady side of the house.” Please note… HE requested more trees. With his desires in mind, I called Fast-Growing-Trees… my online go to tree nursery. They suggested an Eastern Redbud.

With it on its way, Scott thought a couple pink dogwoods would also complement that area nicely. So three more trees have been added to the shady side of our yard.

Then unexpectedly, three more hazelnut trees arrived.

Then we also learned that ButterNut Trees used to proliferate here, but are now quite rare. The butternut is also known as the lemon nut, the oil nut, or the white walnut. One of our electrician’s, Jake, has one in his yard and a second he planned to dig out and toss. Butternuts are struggling to survive! Ontario has put them on their endangered species list because they are being attacked by a fungus… so has Purdue. When we learned he was planning to dispose of one we begged him to please find it a good home rather than destroy it. Well, he said he would bring it to us. So by our back door will grow a wonderful butternut tree.

Methley Plum
Superior Plum

Earlier in the year we had attempted to plant our plum trees, but the type we wanted was not available. Just received word that our Superior Plum that we had just about given up hope of receiving this year became available. And for us, its partner plum, the Methley Plum, was also available. Both will be planted this week.

So… with this in mind, please note… we transferred some hostas to the shady side of the house where grass refuses to grow. Once again, when Scott planted the hostas, HE suggested, “These are great companion flowers for the hostas”, as he points to Helleborus hybridus Confetti Cake aka Confetti Cake Hybrid Lenten Rose. “I think we should get some.”

So with all his grumble, grumble, and muttering, I do know he so loves working in the yard making it a haven for our little feathered and furry friends. It is just there is so much that needs to be completed inside, that between between the outside and inside can be overwhelming…
