Happy Birthday, George!

Today, April 26,  is my oldest son’s birthday! so… Happy Birthday, George!

He and his partner, Paul, are in either Paris or Portugal… though I try, I can not keep their vacation location schedule straight. But, no matter where they are it will be a glorious day because…

IT IS… GEORGE’S BIRTHDAY!

I remember the day he was born as if it were yesterday. It was a warm clear blue sky day. My baby had wanted to be born early for several weeks and though we had made it through the day, this baby decided this was going to be “His/Her“ Day. No ultrasounds were around to know the sex of the baby.

I knew with my first contraction… Baby is coming! They loaded me into an ambulance and sped toward the hospital yelling at me, “DON’T PUSH!”

We pulled into the emergency entrance. They rushed down the hall at a rapid speed hoping to arrive at a delivery room before before my baby arrived. At this point, George, was still almost seven weeks early.

We were barely in the delivery room and out popped George. He had a strong cry but was obviously very much a premie… though he weighed five pounds. They rushed him to the premie nursery where he stayed for the next six weeks. (Parents could only peak through windows in doors in those days)

When we brought him home he still weighed only five pounds. He was the cutest tiniest wrinkliest baby I had ever seen. When my neighbor came out to meet our new addition she gleefully said, “He looks like a little monkey.” And, I burst into tears… New mother hormones working at full tilt…

It only took having him home a few days to smooth out those wrinkles. And, my tiny Georgie grew into the wonderfully thoughtful handsome man he is today.

Happy Birthday, Son!
