Attic Windows…

Windows… this cottage has so many windows… regular windows, arched windows, triangle windows, diamond shaped windows, bay windows, and picture windows. The basement has the fewest windows with a meager nine (9) windows. The main floor has whooping twenty-three (23) windows. The second floor which has our laundry room, sewing room, and two bedrooms has sixteen (16) windows not including the sliding door in my sewing room that connects to our cute upstairs balcony (railing needs re-enforcing). In our attic we have twelve (12) windows. A total of sixty (60) different windows and treatments to consider. So we have had one estimate for just the attic windows (cringe).

But, first, all interior window shutters must come down… not just in the attic, but all through the cottage. We want our home to be inviting, not shuttered off from the world or the sun. We want sunlight to enter the cottage… it will enter from the top of the window sash all the way to the bottom of each window sash.

Now to window treatments… Since I love to sew, I will be making all the curtains and draperies for the house. We will start our curtain drapery adventures in the attic… specifically, in our master attic bedroom. For our window treatments in each room we are considering their location, their primary function for that room, and how much privacy is needed.

Today let’s delve deeper into the window treatments we plan to use to accomplish the goals we have for our attic master bedroom. Privacy is a huge issue. Yes, our bedroom is on the third floor. But, we have traffic coming from four directions. Two of the four directions allow a clear view of our bedroom as a car approaches our corner and neighbors across the street have third floor windows also… We know we want sheers as under curtains. They will be in the old Victorian Priscilla style, not in white or off-white, but in a lovely luminous sage. That will offer a modicum of privacy during the day, but at night, with interior lights… well? Not so much…

We will provide an outer layer for the sheers of lined draperies that can provide that night time privacy we desire… plus, a healthier sleep environment. Many people opt for neutral colors for the versatility they provide when decorating the rest of the room. Those of you that know me know I am not a very neutral type person. So in keeping with that, our attic bedroom draperies will be a vibrant array of countless colors from the subtlest of pinks to the most vivid greens, blues, and reds. They will remind us of the coming Spring during the darkest days of Winter… and provide exceptional protection against the bitterest of Winter days and nights.

As to the style, colors and overall décor of the room? Well, we have our windows…
