Happy May Day!
In Hawaii May Day is Lei Day! So we wish all our Hawaii friends a very Happy Lei Day!
NEWS! Monday, May 1… we now have Baby Girl home with us. She is everything we thought she would be and more… once we finished the ordeal of finalizing her purchase. Honestly, we thought it would take about an hour. Instead we left the house at ten in the morning and did not arrive home with our Baby Girl until four in the afternoon! Buying a car today takes much longer than any car we had ever bought before. I feel so bad for someone who has to finance their car… they must have to camp-out for a week. But, Baby Girl is with us and we think she is adorable…
Saturday Baby Girl said she was ready to go to work so we went to Lowe’s in Amsterdam and purchased ten bags of top soil and ten bags of cow manure and compost. Baby Girl was proud to carry it home for us.
Then, Scott loaded the bottom our raised planter with leaves and humus from the yard, added the topsoil and cow manure and compost on top of the leaves. Next, he added Baking soda, Fish meal, Oyster shells, Epsom salts, Bone meal, and worm castings to the soil mixture.
We added lots of French marigolds that look like russet daisies to each planter because the roots of French marigolds exude chemicals that work against harmful soil nematodes such as eelworms. They make an effective bug spray, look lovely and their puffy flowers attract lady bugs and butterflies.
It turns out that our back yard is filled with black raspberry bushes! They grow wild in this part of the country. And our backyard has been wild enough they are growing all over it. Scott transplanted two of these lovely raspberry bushes to our planters.
Then, of course, we are adding our globe turnips, garlic, shallots, and Roman chamomile to the planter. One planter… finally started! Though we are praying for enough rain as our outside spigot is not working yet.
