What a weekend we had!
Yes, we had the snow two days before Thanksgiving when I told you about our scant six inches.
Well, the day before Thanksgiving was an absolute glorious snow day. Tuesday night, as we slept, the world fell silent as magical snowflakes floated down from the heavens. We woke Wednesday morning to the gentle twirling and swirling of snowflakes. Captivated by the scene, we gazed at the falling flakes throughout the day. As winds picked up, (bringing in the predicted cold front) the winds tossed the snow flakes up and down like oversized confetti.
Then, the temperatures plummeted… to a rather chilly degree (-3) for this time of year.
That dip proved to be very informative when it came to the success of the existing insulation in our cottage. Downstairs, we have the heating tubes with metal plates covering them, but the reflecting material and insulation to cover the tubes and metal plates are not in place yet. And, if you remember, we had to pull down all the finished ceilings, insulation and reflective foil. Well… let’s say, we are aware there is much more that needs to be accomplished before our cottage will be buttoned up.
We managed to stay warm in our sewing/sleeping area, but downstairs, especially our bakery and kitchen? The temperature dropped into the low sixties… then, the fifties… before the cold front eased its grip on us, the kitchen and bakery had dipped into the forties.
There is much work to be completed in order to warm the kitchen and bakery. Both those rooms have unique challenges.
The mudroom area is not over the cellar: ergo, no heat. Therefore the bakery is not only attempting to warm its own area, but is counterattacked by the lack of heat coming from the mudroom.
The kitchen has difficulties specific to that room….
(1) Three sides of the room are exposed to the elements.
(2) The kitchen sits over a crawl space (no heat) not in the basement.
(3) Windows…
There is a large bay window comprised of three large windows…
Then, there is a large picture window facing the side yard…
Finally, there is a smaller window, though not small by window standards, next to the picture window.
All windows allow beautiful views of our yard and wonderful ways for heat to escape.
Tomorrow I will tell you about our actual Thanksgiving, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
But… AGAIN, I want to emphasize… we are warm and safe in our sewing room and Scott is working as quickly as possible to complete our bedroom…
