Our Hobbit Door…

As those of us who are avid readers know and those who aren’t avid readers can learn, magical little people’s desires for seclusion are slightly different from ours. After all Hobbits and other mystical small people are intimidated by our large size. Also, they like to keep their whereabouts unobtrusive from humans, partly because they are smaller and partly because they are extremely gentle creatures. Plus, they are not fans of having unexpected visitors. So with those concerns in mind, we began planning how we could respect our “Hobbit’s” entrance and lifestyle.

We would never consider laying down a standard walkway to the entrance of “our” Bilbo door, but instead lay down an unusual walkway that embraces the joys of nature as you approach the entrance. After all, Hobbits appreciate the little things. To accomplish this we picked out some decorative stones along with river rocks to make a more natural pathway to the door. Along this pathway several varieties of thyme will be planted to provide a path that is both stoney and floral while providing beauty, lovely fragrances, and numerous health benefits; including improving vision, circulation, heart, and our immune system… a comfort and benefit for anyone embarking or dining on it.

And remember, although Hobbits love to spend time with friends and family, they also prefer to not have unexpected guests. Because our Hobbit door will be under the bay window to our dining room and facing the side street, we will protect it from “unexpected guests” by planting forsythias in front of it. So the end of April when our trees come from the Arbor Day Foundation two beautiful forsythias will be among our collection. To offer our Hobbit door seclusion we will plant those two forsythias between the street sidewalk and their more natural walkway on that side of the house.

So, at this point we believe we have a plan to make our Bilbo door happy…
