Excitement…

Yesterday morning when we went out to the car, we were so surprised because what we thought was dew on the windshield was actually a light sheet of ice. How fun! Our first frost!

The last few days have been filled with excitement… Not the kind I particularly wanted, but part of the reality of the times. As many of you know, we had the layout for our primary kitchen finished. But, we had not talked about an existing exhaust vent that had been in the original kitchen. Scott wondered if we needed to update it since it was from the Fifties. When I mentioned to Steve Maxson, our fabulous electrician, that the original vent remained on our kitchen wall, he suggested we check with John to see what he recommended.

The next thing I knew we were looking at range hoods. And, a new problem emerged. We have two windows on the side of the kitchen where the vent is. The space between those two windows is a little less than 30 inches. Our cooktop is 36 inches. Range hood blocking windows? Ugh!

I wanted to make a decision that I knew I could live with before I bothered anyone else about it. So I studied the kitchen. Realized that if we just shifted the copper sink to the other side of the bay window. Moved the cooktop to the opposite side of the room, all our problems would be solved.

When I shared my thoughts with Scott, he was confused and not too happy, initially. He did not realize I had been thinking about options. At the same time I told Joe that I thought he needed to wait to put up the drywall in the kitchen until I spoke to John and Steve. Well, apparently everyone had arranged their schedules to start yesterday morning. So I was throwing a monkey wrench into everyone’s plans.

I explained to Scott my logic and after thinking about it he agreed. We decided to let them go ahead and sheet rock knowing that the worse that could happen is we would have to take some Sheetrock down.

So yesterday morning, we went to see John of Herl Woodcraft & Son to show him my thoughts of the new arrangement for the kitchen. He thought they worked brilliantly. We went ahead and looked at woods and stains for the cabinets. He showed me a very unique stain (Micheal’s Cherry) that I fell in love with. I asked if I could see it on cherry wood. They had not put it on cherry wood before so he is making me a sample. Stay tuned!

As we were leaving his shop we had the privilege of meeting his father, the person who started this amazing woodcrafting shop. What a fabulous way to start our morning. Ice on our car, designs corrected for the kitchen, a dream stain for our cabinets, and meeting the Dad who started it all.

So we proceeded home to see if we could find a range hood for our kitchen that won’t cost a fortune and still look Victorian. This is what we found.

Today our kitchen is sheet rocked, we have a range hood picked out, Steve will be able to put in the extra wiring for the relocation of the vent in the range hood, and things are back on track…
