Refrigerators…

A question I keep receiving is, are our appliances going to be stainless steel? Well, yes, but not the shiny metal-looking stainless steel we are used to seeing in many kitchens today. We have chosen the new black-colored stainless appliances for our home. Since the more authentic Victorian-period looking appliances cost an arm and leg more than the regularly expensive appliances we decided that black-colored stainless appliances were an excellent option. That addressed… on to our appliance of today…

Refrigerators, the options seem endless. Should we choose side-by-side, top-freezer, bottom-freezer or French door; one-door two-door, three-door, or four-door; a water dispenser on the outside or inside: an ice maker or dispenser?

The choices bogle our minds. We decide to check out as many brands as possible, then realize there were so many brands it is nearly impossible to check them all out.  Some of the brands we check include Whirlpool, Amana, Maytag, LG, Samsung, GE, KitchenAid, Bosch, Thermador, Wolf, Jenn-Air, Hotpoint, RCA, Viking, Gaggenau, Roper, Tappan, Scotsman, Sub-Zero, Admiral… and the list goes on.

Having been the consumer of numerous refrigerators over the years we learned we are not a fan of the side by side models. Usually, we find the freezer section to narrow to even store a good sized turkey.

Then, we found that the top freezer models had us bending constantly when entering the refrigerator. Plus, with my vision problem I have virtually no lower half of my eye vision so I need to stoop very low to find what I need.

The bottom freezer is not too bad an option since we rarely go digging in the freezer more than once or twice a day.

But, the French door model… now that is a change. Once you memorize your refrigerator you only have to open half the refrigerator. Plus now they have a door within a door where you can store your milk, juices, or small frequently used items and not open the main refrigerator at all.

Then, the elusive Energy Star… ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators are about twenty (20) percent more energy efficient than standard models. Though, as we searched, we did not find any refrigerators that are not energy star rated so that discussion is becoming pointless.

Basically, it came down to which model did we like best. For our Victorian cottage and our style of functioning, the French door style just made sense from a practical and aesthetic point of view. Then, we are avid water drinkers and I love ice in my water, so an ice/water dispenser in the door of the refrigerator was our second solid decision.

As we studied the different models and styles we realized the LG French door style refrigerator met our needs best, Plus, it had a middle drawer for quick grab and go items, looked lovely, and it is made in South Korea, an homage to our Josh’s birth country. Refrigerator decided!
